How to book

Booking Mount Rainier, start to finish

Where
Recreation.gov. National park campgrounds are not bookable by phone during the reservation season.
When
Cougar Rock is already published into mid-October, so there is no later drop to wait for. Ohanapecosh has no 2026 reservation dates posted at all yet, which makes it a page to recheck rather than a date to plan around.
Be ready
Sign in, save a card and settle your dates and party size before the window opens. Popular weekends go in minutes, and the checkout you prepared in advance is the one that completes.
Which campground
Cougar Rock is the Paradise-side campground and the one most people want. Ohanapecosh is in the southeast corner, in old-growth forest, and about an hour away by road. They serve different trips, not the same trip twice.
Book at least a day out
Both reservable campgrounds cut off bookings one day before arrival, so a same-day cancellation cannot be picked up online. Watch for openings two or more days ahead.
If you miss it
Cancellations are the realistic second chance. They appear at any hour, cluster in the last two weeks before arrival, and are usually taken within minutes.
Backup plans
White River is first-come only and usually opens late June, and Gifford Pinchot National Forest has campgrounds along the southern approaches.
